Unmasked – Finding Your Self Worth, A Spider-Man’s Story.

Tomisin Adebari

As a huge Spider-Man fan (and you might be able to guess who my favorite is), I can’t help but mention the iconic saying: “With great power comes great responsibility.” For those who may not know, Spider-Man is that guy in red and blue who swings through the city. Peter Parker, his alter ego, dealt with all kinds of teenage drama while trying to balance being a superhero and just getting through everyday life…because let’s be real, handling algebra while saving the world is no easy task!

A pivotal moment in Spider-Man 2 is when Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, overwhelmed with responsibilities, decides to stop being Spider-Man. In a less-than-heroic moment, he throws his Spidey suit in the trash. Look Peter was struggling.. okay? his school, work, and relationships were falling apart. This left him questioning whether he was good enough to continue being Spider-Man or if he should just live a normal life.

This scene is a powerful metaphor for those moments when we feel consumed by self-doubt, questioning if we’re good enough to pursue our goals or live up to expectations.

When Peter gives up being Spider-Man, he hopes that living a “normal” life will bring him happiness and confidence. But what he discovers is that ignoring his true self didn’t make the doubt disappear…it deepened it.

Like Peter, our self-worth is not tied to what we do, our job, or our achievements, but to who we are. When we tie our worth to external things, any failure can make us feel like we don’t measure up. Just like Peter forgot his values (resilience and courage) when he started doubting himself, we too lose sight of our strengths during moments of self-doubt.

Although “with great power comes great responsibility,” real self-worth isn’t in those responsibilities, it’s in who we are at our core.

When Peter puts down the suit, it feels like a relief at first, but soon he realizes he can’t ignore the parts of himself that make him Spider-Man. The world still needs him, and eventually, he understands that his value isn’t just in being a superhero, it’s in his courage, heart, and perseverance. He doesn’t need to be perfect or always succeed; he just has to keep trying.

In the end, Peter’s journey in Spider-Man 2 is about self-acceptance, flaws and all. He learns that his worth isn’t tied to the Spider-Man suit…it’s in his choices and who he is inside. When we learn to accept ourselves, we build a stronger foundation of self-esteem that can weather life’s ups and downs.

So, the next time you feel like tossing your Spider-Man suit in the trash (or just hiding under your blanket), know that every superhero has their off days.
